I've been wanting a juicer forever just so that I can whip up my own fresh juices; but in the meantime I finally ordered (with much anticipation) some really fresh, creative and delicious concoctions from a lovely local company in SF called Living Greens
, run by the lovely Michelle and Bryan.
'Immune Rocket' and 'Liver Detox'
The power of juicing is multifold; it's simply a wonderful way to get some good quality nutrition due to the fact that you're getting more fruits and veggies than you normally ever would consume, thereby getting a load of densely packed vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. And since juice doesn't require digestion, all this nutritional goodness is going straight into your system. Abundant in fruits and vegetables are antioxidant Vitamins A, C, E and B's- all of which are potent liver cleansers- not to mention riboflavin, potassium and magnesium. Deficiencies in said V & M will manifest as cracked lips, easily sunburnt skin, hair loss, brain fog, sluggishness, digestive issues, skin problems and poor immunity. You can also count on balanced pH levels due to the fact that all veggies are super alkalinizing.
I've been bursting with energy all day long (enough to run 5 miles at Crissy Field) and don't want it to be over.. I ordered 3 delicious kinds ('Immune Rocket', 'Liver Detox' and a Weekly Special with Fennel- one of my fav veggies) which have sustained and left me feeling vibrant and nourished all day long; I haven't been tired, hungry or requiring (large) meals.
What a delicious 1-day cleanse- and a wonderful weekly routine to look forward to! If you're in the bay area, be sure to holler at Living Greens
. They'll even deliver to your office!
What's better than a weekend that includes Organic Mexican dining (loaded with drizzles of Cashew Cheese), Bi-Rite Creamery, and a Neighborhood Garden Party full of local goodies- not to mention- lots of good company and no-jacket-required weather? In this town, that's the life!
In the far reaches of the Amazon, the women of the Incan tribes relied on earthly means to heal the sick and weary. They carefully chose herbs and dug up roots, but most importantly they looked to the medicinal properties of the Sacha Inchi plant. Mounted on Alpacas, they traversed the highlands of Peru, searching for this elusive plant. Centuries later, the legend of the Sacha Inchi plant has been passed down through generations.
New from TerrAmazon, you could enjoy this nutritious and yummy superfoody snack. One serving provides 6 grams of heart loving, brain boosting omega 3 fatty acids, 6 grams of dietary fiber, and as much protein as in a cup of yogurt. The crunch of this seed is like that of a pistachio. Comes in 3 delish flavors: sweet, roasted and tamari. Got mine at Whole Foods.
This magical, saffron-colored spice called Turmeric is one of the most natural healers. Hailing from India and Indonesia, Turmeric has been used for over 5000 years as a therapeutic remedy and textile dye.
Its benefits are tremendous, tried and true!
A natural anti-inflammatory, Turmeric helps treat arthritis, and unlike other drugs, does not produce toxicity or other significant side effects. It improves liver function while detoxifying it, speeds up healing of wounds and damaged/inflammatory skin conditions as it is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial disinfectant, is a natural painkiller, prevents the oxidation of cholesterol in the body, and as a powerful antioxidant, boosts the body's immunity and neutralizes free radicals, thus warding off tumorous growth.
There are tons of fun ways to incorporate Turmeric into your recipes:
Sprinkle on eggs, in brown rice with currants, cashews and coriander, in curries, in salads, on cauliflower and broccoli, in stir frys, and my personal favorite: on avocados!
Avocado spread on toast in one of my fav, quick & easy breakfast moves. It's filling and nutritious, yummy and oh so satisfying:
Avocados have a rich supply of the antioxidants Vitamins C, E and beta carotene--- the only true way to fight off free radicals. They're also high in monounsaturated fat (the good fat), which is associated with lowering blood pressure, as well as essential protein and fiber. Sprinkle dashes of sea salt, black pepper and Turmeric, adding a bit of color and kick!
So it's not neon blue or car-fluid yellow. But it contains tons of electrolytes- not to mention potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
Here's an immune-boosting, all natural, cholesterol-free, mineral-rich drink: Coconut Water!
Coconut Water is an isotonic solution that replaces fluids and minerals that get lost when the body is physically active. Therefore, athletes and gym-nuts should reach for this drink to hydrate and get minerals back. Did you know that during WWII when IV solutions were scarce, wounded soldiers were revived with Coconut Water? Today, in some third world countries CW is used as a blood plasma alternative method, known as the Coconut IV!
Coconut Water also balances the body's pH, controls diabetes, aids in circulation, detoxifies and fights viruses, increases metabolism, eases stomach pain and vomitting, improves intestinal health and treats kidney stones. It's also completely free of chemicals, so it's safe for babies and pregnant women. As a matter of fact, CW contains lauric acid- which is found in breast milk.
So, ward off some fatigue and get some Coconut Water!
Some popular brands include: Zico, Vita Coco & O.N.E- all tetra-packaged to preserve nutrients. OR just buy the real deal! Look for young coconuts and open one yourself!
So how good can a cookie be without refined sugar, eggs, dairy, wheat, hydrogenated oils, trans fat or gluten? While at Whole Foods yesterday I picked up a sample of The No Cookie Cookie in Carob Mint... This little cookie blew my mind, and it was totally good enough to take home to the boyf (anti-vegan) who concurred it was the best cookie ever. They're made with Organic Barley Flour, Cane Juice, Carob Chips, Non-hydrogenated Margarine, Filtered Water, Prunes, Natural Peppermint Oil, Baking Soda, and Soy Lecithin. So natural, so delish, the way baked goods should be prepared; truly, vegan never tasted so good.
